Sponge iron is also known as direct reduced iron. It adopts high quality ore, adopts the principle of REDOX reaction, and eliminates it by filter lake removal method. After water treatment, the dissolved oxygen content of water can reach below 0.05mg/L. With low backwash frequency, high compressive strength, no powder, no hardening, large specific surface area. High activity and good regeneration effect.
Main Use
Used in electric furnaces.
Sponge iron is mainly used in electric furnace steelmaking, instead of scrap steel or used with scrap steel to improve the charge. Compared with the use of scrap steel smelting in electric furnace, the advantages of using sponge iron are:
(1) The chemical composition of sponge iron is stable, which is beneficial to control the quality of steel;
(2) Sponge iron contains few impurity elements (especially P, S, N), and poor quality scrap steel used together, can smelt the use of high-quality scrap steel smelting steel, is conducive to improving the quality of steel and expanding the variety of steel;
(3) When smelting sponge iron, the melting period and refining period are interwoven, which can shorten the smelting time and improve the productivity;
(4) Sponge iron shape is spherical or block, can be continuous feeding, continuous hot charging, so as to reduce electrode consumption, prolong the life of the furnace top, furnace lining, reduce the heat loss of the furnace, improve productivity, all of these help to reduce production costs;
(5) Stable power supply and low noise during smelting;
(6) Sponge iron is easy to handle and transport.
In addition, when the price of scrap is high, especially in areas that rely on imported scrap, the use of cheap sponge iron can reduce the cost of raw materials, and is not subject to import restrictions.
Therefore, in terms of economy, steel quality and productivity, using sponge iron is superior to using scrap steel.
Used in blast furnace
Sponge iron can be used as a part of blast furnace charge. It has been tested in blast furnaces of different sizes. The results show that when the metallization rate of blast furnace is increased by 10%(with a certain limit), the yield of molten iron can be increased by 7% and the coke ratio can be decreased by 7%. The proportion of sponge iron to blast furnace charge depends on the operating conditions of blast furnace.
Used for converter
Sponge iron can be used as coolant in converter steelmaking, which does not need to change the normal smelting system of converter, and can reduce the content of P, S, Cu, N and other elements in steel, which is conducive to improving the quality of steel
Other Uses
Sponge iron can also be used as powder metallurgy material, or even rolled directly.
