Tungsten iron is an alloy of tungsten and iron. It is used as an alloying agent for tungsten in steelmaking and casting. Tungsten iron is one of the most important alloying elements for the production of special steels. It is widely used in the manufacture of high-speed tool steels, alloy structural steels, magnetic steels, stainless steel,etc. Tungsten in steel can combine with other elements to become complex carbides, making the grains of steel finer, which can improve the red hardness, wear resistance and impact strength of steel, and can reduce the elongation of steel to a small extent. At the same time, increasing the strength limit and yield point of steel can also increase the hardness and wear resistance of the steel. It is particularly important that tungsten has a good effect on the high temperature mechanical properties of steel, which can improve heat resistance and tempering stability.

Iron tungsten is smelted in an electric furnace. Due to its high melting point, it cannot be released in a liquid state, so it is produced by agglomeration and iron extraction.

1.Agglomeration method: Use carbon reducing agent to smelt in open electric furnace in the upper stage detachable batch and add the whole charge from tungsten concentrate, pitch coke (or petroleum coke) slagging agent (alumina vanadium), The iron-tungsten obtained in the furnace is viscous. After the furnace is full, the furnace is stopped and the upper furnace body is dismantled. After the agglomeration condensed, the clot is taken out to obtain the tungsten iron (which contain 80% tungsten and carbon less than 1%).
2. Iron extraction method: silicon and carbon are used as reducing agents, and there are three stages, reduction, refining, and iron extraction. Slag containing more than 10% of WO3 is added to the furnace, and tungsten concentrate contains 75% of silicon iron and a small amount of silicon. Asphalt coke (or petroleum coke) is subjected to reduction smelting. When the slag contains WO3 below 0.3%, the slag is put into refining, and tungsten concentrate is added in batches during the refining period. The asphalt coke mixture is under high voltage and high temperature. Removal of impurities such as silicon and manganese will start to extract iron when the ingredients are qualified. In the past, iron blocks were manually excavated with steel spoons. Mechanical iron has now been used to improve labor conditions. The obtained tungsten iron contains 70% tungsten and the tungsten recovery rate is 99%.
